Nights Away and Camping
Nights Away or residential events, such as camping or sleepovers, are a key part of Scouts. They’re something that every young person should have the opportunity to take part in. However, it is important that arrange these activities safely and make the relevant provisions, including notifying the relevant section lead.
The Nights Away Permit Scheme
The Nights Away Permit Scheme promotes quality residential and camping experiences. It shows that all those leading nights away events for young people within Scouts have the skills, experience and personal suitability to take young people away safely.
It's designed so that it can be tailored to be as flexible as possible, while at the same time providing a robust checking process for leaders of nights away events.
The permit should be seen as an enabling device to show a person's competence and to provide reassurance to parents of the young people. While at the same time, it should also be encouraging to adults to acquire and improve the skills required to provide residential experiences.
Permits are only available to members of The Scout Association and cease to be valid if membership ends.
Remember, If you do not hold a permit, you are not allowed to run a Nights Away Experience. This applies to expired permits as well.

The online form on the left of this page can be used to notify the relevant District Section Lead Volunteer (DSLV) or a downloaded version can be emailed to them. These should be emailed to nan@liverpoolnorthdistrict.org.uk addressed to the relevant DSLV as follows:

Risk Assessments
As with all activities, a written Risk Assessment must be produced and shared with all participants. This must also be shared with the relevant Commissioner or District Section Lead Volunteer. These can be email to the District NAN email address as noted above.
Please be aware, if any Leader runs a Nights Away or residential experience with either No Permit or an Expired permit or Fails to Inform the DC or appropriate DSLV re a Nights Away or residential experience or does not provide a copy of the event Risk Assessment to the DC or appropriate DSLV, this may lead them to having their permit withdrawn or not obtain one. If any incidents occur, this may lead to the Scout Association not supporting the leader.
